Bumthang is the spiritual heartland of Bhutan — a cluster of four sacred valleys (Chhoekhor, Tang, Ura, and Chhume) that cradle some of the country's oldest and most revered temples, dating as far back as the 7th century. The Bumthang Cultural Trek weaves together the joy of mountain walking with deep immersion in Bhutanese Buddhist culture, traditional village life, and breathtaking alpine scenery.
Unlike high-altitude adventures, this trek is accessible to moderately fit trekkers. The trail winds through fragrant forests of blue pine and fir, open ridges with panoramic views of the Bumthang valleys, and visits to sacred sites — some so remote they are accessible only on foot. You will share tea with elderly monks in centuries-old monasteries, observe artisans weaving Bumthang kishuthara (silk fabric), and wake each morning to the sound of temple bells echoing across the valley.
Best seasons are spring (March–May) when rhododendrons bloom in vivid colours, and autumn (September–November) for clear skies and golden buckwheat fields.
Fly into Paro International Airport and drive to Bumthang (approx. 8 hours) via the iconic Trongsa Dzong. Stop at Wangdue Phodrang and Trongsa for brief sightseeing. Overnight in Jakar, Bumthang.
Acclimatise with a cultural walk through the Chhoekhor valley. Visit Jakar Dzong, Jambay Lhakhang (7th century, built by King Songtsen Gampo of Tibet), Kurjey Lhakhang where Guru Rinpoche meditated, and Tamshing Monastery famed for its wall paintings. Overnight in Bumthang.
Begin trekking from Ngang Lhakhang (Swan Temple), one of the most sacred sites in Bumthang. The trail crosses farming villages and small streams before ascending through pine forests to Ogyen Choling — a remarkable 17th-century palace-monastery complex. Visit the museum and interact with the resident monk community. Camp at Ogyen Choling.
Ascend through rhododendron and juniper forests to the Phephela La pass — draped in prayer flags with sweeping views of Bumthang's valleys. The descent leads through terraced farmland. Camp near the pass in an alpine meadow.
Descend into the secluded Tang valley, known for its traditional farms, apricot orchards, and remote meditation retreats. Visit Membar Tsho (Burning Lake), a sacred lake where Terton Pema Lingpa discovered hidden treasures. Overnight camp in the Tang valley.
Follow the Tang valley trail south, crossing an ancient stone bridge and through meadows grazed by yaks and horses. Climb to the village of Ura — one of the highest and most traditional villages in Bhutan, famous for its annual Ura Yakchoe festival. Overnight homestay in Ura.
Morning walk through Ura village's stone-paved lanes and traditional stone houses. Visit Ura Lhakhang. Drive back to Bumthang through the Chhume valley, passing cottage weaving industries. Farewell dinner with local Bumthangpa family. Overnight in Bumthang.
Early morning drive from Bumthang to Paro (approx. 8 hours). Stop at Dochula Pass for views of the Great Himalayan range on a clear day. Arrive at Paro airport for your onward flight.
