Punakha Drubchen & Tshechu

Location: Punakha, Bhutan
Duration: 5 Days / 4 Nights

A Battle Reborn — History & Devotion in Punakha

The Punakha Drubchen is one of the most spectacular and unique festivals in all of Bhutan — and arguably the most dramatic. Held annually at the magnificent Punakha Dzong in late winter (February–March), it commemorates the 17th-century victory of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal's forces over the Tibetan army in 1639. Over 300 warriors dressed in armour, carrying shields and weapons, re-enact the battle in the courtyards of the dzong — a breathtaking spectacle unlike anything else in Asia.

Immediately following the Drubchen, the Punakha Tshechu begins — three days of sacred Cham mask dances performed by monks and laymen in elaborately embroidered costumes. The festival culminates with the unfurling of a massive thangka (sacred scroll painting), revered for its power to bestow blessings on all who witness it.

The setting could not be more dramatic: the Punakha Dzong — Bhutan's former winter capital — sits at the confluence of two rivers surrounded by jacaranda trees in full bloom at this time of year, their purple flowers reflected in the river below.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 01

Arrival in Paro & Drive to Punakha (1,200m)

Fly into Paro International Airport. Drive to Punakha via Thimphu and the spectacular Dochula Pass (3,100m). On a clear day, enjoy panoramic views of the Eastern Himalayan peaks. Check in to your hotel in Punakha. Evening orientation walk along the Mo Chhu river. Welcome dinner with your guide.

Day 02

Punakha Drubchen — The Battle Re-enactment

Witness the extraordinary Drubchen ceremony. Hundreds of warriors in period armour — chainmail, helmets, bows, and swords — fill the Punakha Dzong courtyard to re-enact the 1639 battle. The ritual is accompanied by sacred music, chanting monks, and elaborate religious offerings. It is a profound blend of history, theatre, and Buddhist devotion. Your guide will explain the historical and spiritual significance throughout the day.

Day 03

Punakha Tshechu — Sacred Mask Dances

The Tshechu begins with the first day of Cham dances. Watch the Shawa Shachi (deer and hunter dance), Pholay Molay (prince and princess dance), and the dazzling Drametse Ngacham — a dance of thunderous drums performed by 16 monks in vibrant costumes. Thousands of Bhutanese gather in traditional dress. Festival food stalls and artisan markets surround the dzong. Interact with local families and photograph the colour and spirit of this ancient tradition.

Day 04

Tshechu Day Two & Valley Exploration

Morning at the final day of the Tshechu — the most sacred day, featuring the unfurling of the giant Thongdrol (sacred thangka). Seeing the Thongdrol is believed to wash away the sins of a lifetime. Afternoon walk to Chimi Lhakhang (Fertility Temple) through rice paddies. Visit a traditional farmhouse for butter tea and local rice wine (ara). Farewell dinner in Punakha.

Day 05

Drive to Paro & Departure

Morning at leisure in Punakha. Drive back to Paro via Thimphu. Visit the National Memorial Chorten and Buddha Dordenma (giant Buddha statue) in Thimphu. Continue to Paro airport for your international departure. Carry home the extraordinary memory of Bhutan's most dramatic festival.
